Drop-In

Drop-In Centres are an important resource for homeless and marginalised people. They provide a place where they can socialise, shower, get social assistance and have something to eat and drink.

Homeless Healthcare provides a number of clinics in Drop-In Centres. Access to mainstream health services is often difficult for homeless and marginalised people. The onsite primary health care services offered by Homeless Healthcare in Drop-In Centres offers homeless people easier access to services in a familiar environment

Shelter

There are a number of homeless people that either have unstable housing or are in longer-term hostel care. Short-term supported housing, often limited to 3 months, is available to homeless people while more stable housing is found for those that can afford it. Some of the hostels providing longer-term housing serve a particular section of the population such as those who have a mental illness or are elderly.

Homeless Healthcare operates a number of clinics in these facilities to improve the health of residents and to help facilitate them moving into the wider community if appropriate.

Communities

Drug and Alcohol Therapeutic Communities give a person with substance dependence the chance to develop life skills and teach them how to become free of their dependence. Most offer a 3-month live-in program which can be extended if need be.

A large proportion of homeless people have drug and alcohol dependence issues.

People with drug and alcohol dependence issues are marginalised by society. The health problems they difficulties they face and experience when trying to engage with mainstream health services are the same as homeless people.

We now provide General Practice clinics in a number of Drug and Alcohol Therapeutic Communities using a similar model to that which is used in our Drop-In Clinics. After completing their residential stay, patients are able to access our Transitional clinic until they are well established in the wider community and feel comfortable accessing mainstream health services.

Youth

Homeless youth are a big issue that confronts society and those under 18 years of age make up 41% of people who are homeless in WA.

It is vital that we have services in place to ensure that homeless youth find stable affordable housing as soon as possible and that their healthcare is adequately addressed to avoid the development of premature chronic disease so commonly seen amongst the homeless community.

Recently, Homeless Healthcare started Youth specific clinics and we hope to expand on these further over the coming months to years.
